Student Council will run buses to the Richmond and Charlottesville airports this Thanksgiving break, Student Life Committee Co-Chair Aagya Mathur said.
Five Richmond buses and four Charlottesville buses will run the Tuesday before break. One bus also will head to Richmond on Wednesday morning as will two to the Charlottesville airport.
Return buses will run Sunday and Monday. The full schedule is available on Student Council's Web site.
Tickets will go on sale today and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, Student Life Committee Co-Chair Kristin Flow said. Tickets are $5 to go to Charlottesville and $10 to go to Richmond. The tickets are all one-way, and return tickets are the same price. Each shuttle's capacity is limited to 32 students.
Students can buy tickets at the Newcomb Box Office or online. The buses will pick up students at McCormick Road dormitories and drop them off at the airport terminals.
Student Council also plans to run buses during Winter Break and Spring Break, Flow said. Mathur added that Council hopes the buses might eventually run to Washington, D.C. airports, as well.
"We want to cater to the students," Mathur said. "There's a lot of demand for [the busing] and a lot of students have talked about how other schools have it."
Student Council sent out a survey to gauge interest, receiving more than 1,000 results, Mathur said.
"Over a thousand were interested, but it's a matter of how many people will actually pursue it and buy tickets," Flow said.
Flow said the Student Life Committee has been considering the idea of buses since the end of last year, and the idea has been gathering steam all semester. Council will use ticket payments to cover all costs associated with the buses, Flow added.
