A group of University Engineering students is working to launch an undergraduate research journal titled The Spectra Engineering and Science Research Journal.
"Our goal for the journal is to increase the exposure of engineering research, applied science research and engineering design," said Chris Belyea, a fourth-year Engineering student and The Spectra's founder and editor-in-chief. "Our vision is to provide a new publication platform for students at U.Va."
Belyea added that he believes the University will benefit from having a niche journal that caters exclusively to Engineering students.
In addition to giving undergraduates a forum to publish their faculty-led research, The Spectra also hopes to advertise the work of University undergraduates to prospective students who may be seeking admission to the University's Engineering School. To accomplish this objective, Belyea said, The Spectra will send a copy of the journal to every high school career center in Virginia.
"High school students can see that we are doing real and exciting research, which they too can have the opportunity to participate in at U.Va," stated Liz Dobrenz, a first-year Engineering student and member of the editorial board, in a press release.
A 23-person student editorial board will run the journal and will be assisted by a faculty advisory board, whose members are currently being chosen, Belyea said. Students from the editorial board will edit articles and then submit them to a peer-review process to ensure that they meet scientific and technical soundness. Each article will be reviewed by a doctoral student and an undergraduate student studying the article's subject matter, Belyea added.
According to a press release sent by its staff, The Spectra "is moving full-steam towards its first issue." The staff plans to publish the journal annually.
The publication will begin to accept submissions Dec. 1 and plans to release its first issue in April.
