Disappointing support

While attending the Virginia Tech game this past Saturday, I was very disappointed by what I saw within Scott Stadium. It had nothing to do with the hard work of our student-athletes or the coaching of the now-departed Al Groh. Rather, it was the poor performance of our student section.

Despite our 3-8 record entering the game, we were playing a rivalry game with Tech, so everything that has happened throughout the season should go out the window. I arrived at the game to find the student section, and a large part of the stadium, filled with Hokie fans. It is unfathomable to me that so few students were willing to give up a day of their Thanksgiving break to support our team against the hated Hokies, especially with a month-long winter break less than three weeks away. The chants of "Let's Go, Hokies" routinely drowned out the best efforts of the Wahoo faithful in attendance.

More disturbing than a lack of fans is the fact that so many University students were willing to sell Tech fans their student guest tickets. I know many people who attend Tech, but would never even dream of buying one of them a ticket.

While my four years of attending football games for free have now concluded, I hope that I will see a better effort from Cavalier fans in future years when I return to games as an alumnus.
