When one team loses to another 13 straight times, that may be a sign it is time to change things up. The Virginia women's basketball team, coming off a tight overtime win against Miami Thursday, will aim to do just that, donning pink uniforms against No. 18 North Carolina tonight in recognition of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "Pink Zone," which supports breast cancer research and awareness efforts.
The Cavaliers (18-6, 7-3 ACC) face a North Carolina team that has lost four consecutive conference games, however, including two at home. The Tar Heels (16-7, 4-5 ACC) fell to Boston College 69-62 at home Thursday night.
Junior guards Italee Lucas and Cetera DeGraffenreid lead UNC offensively. Lucas averages 15.9 points per game and DeGraffenreid averages 12.6, while contributing 5.1 assists.
The Cavaliers' victory against Miami marked their third straight win in the ACC. Wright, who contributed 24 points during the contest, enters tonight's game ranked No. 8 in the nation and No. 1 in the ACC in scoring.
North Carolina holds a 43-31 advantage in the all-time series against Virginia, with the Cavaliers' last win in 2003. Although the Tar Heels still are ranked in the top 25 in AP polling, their four straight losses have dropped them to eighth in the conference.
Virginia will face Longwood next in Charlottesville Feb. 16, after which the Cavaliers will conclude their regular season with three straight ACC matchups before the conference tournament.
