Gerson shines, team stumbles against Deacons

The Virginia women's basketball team stumbled against Wake Forest Sunday afternoon, losing 64-57 to end its four-game winning streak.

Freshman guard Lexie Gerson led the way for the Cavaliers with 15 points - yet another reminder that she is becoming one of Virginia's best players.

Also scoring in double digits were sophomore guard Ariana Moorer and senior guard Monica Wright. Though Wright contributed 13 points and seven rebounds, Sunday was a subpar outing for the preseason ACC Player of the Year, who averages 22 points per game. Wright struggled from the field, shooting 6-for-15, as well as only 1-for-3 from the line.

Heading the charge for the Demon Deacons were freshman center Sandra Garcia and sophomore forward Secily Ray, whose combined 23 rebounds surpassed the total grabbed by Virginia's starting lineup. Garcia added 21 points, while Ray contributed 14.

Virginia continues ACC action Thursday at 7 p.m. in John Paul Jones Arena against Clemson.
