IFC holds first round of elections

Newly elected president will focus on safety, foster positive image of Greek life on Grounds

The Inter-Fraternity Council held its first round of elections last night for the 2010 term.

Penn Daniel, a third-year College student and a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, was elected the IFC's next president.

Daniel said his main priorities as president will be safety, expansion of recruitment and outreach, which will be done in part through co-sponsorships with other organizations. He also said he plans to increase the communication between the vice presidents of the IFC and the governing board.

Overall, Daniel hopes to maintain a good image of the Greek system and the University, he said.

"We want to maintain a positive image and work successfully with other organizations as much as possible," he said. "I am very excited about this opportunity and feel very fortunate to be with such a great group of guys."

Before he was elected president, Daniel was the IFC's chairman for membership education and also held leadership positions at other organizations, including Student Council, Alternative Spring Break and Madison House.

The IFC also elected third-year Commerce student Trey Goggins as its new vice president for membership and second-year College student Marshall Burke as the new vice president for risk management. In addition, third-year College student Jackson Hill will serve as vice president for judiciary, third-year Commerce student Bill Igou will be the next vice president for administration and third-year College student Geer LeBoutillier will be the new member-at-large.

The new administration already foresees some hurdles it will have to overcome, Hill said.

"I think that the biggest challenge that the IFC Judiciary Committee faces is the fact that the rules that we have in place are sometimes very hard to enforce," he said.

As the new leaders prepared to take over the IFC's administration, outgoing IFC president Charles Gamper said he was particularly satisfied with the increase in the number of rush participants during his term.

"We are very proud of those numbers and that's something that we want to continue to build on next year," he said.

The IFC will hold its second round of elections Feb. 25 to elect its final six positions.
