The Date

\nCary: I wasn't really nervous. I didn't put any super high expectations on it. I didn't really know what to expect as to what exactly she would be like ... I figured she'd be cool and it would be a casual setting, so I wouldn't have to worry too much. My friends thought it was funny. I'm not usually the type of person to go on a blind date.

Sharon: I was excited for it because I've never been on a blind date before. I wasn't really nervous, just kind of curious to find out who the person was and that's about it. When I told my mom I was going on the date, she was kind of terrified for me and said that she'd never do it in a million years but wished me good luck. My friends were excited to hear about it and find out who it was. They were keeping track of all the details of it.

Cary: I figured you would match me up with someone who would like outdoors stuff and things like that, so I thought she would be cool to talk to. I was waiting outside Basil. I had gotten there a little early. She walked up and introduced herself, and we figured out we were the dates, so we walked inside and got a table.

Sharon: It was 6 p.m. on a Saturday and kind of raining out. There weren't many people there, so I just kind of went up and asked if he was Cary and he said. "Yes," so we went inside. I was excited.

Cary: I thought she was cute. I mean, she, you know, kind of matches what I'm attracted to, so I was pretty pleased in that respect. Yeah. She seemed pretty casual so I expected we'd get along well.

Sharon: My first impression was that he seemed really nice. He held the door, which was a plus. I couldn't tell if he was nervous or not but once we sat down and started looking at the menu and talking he just seemed like a really nice guy.

Cary: We chatted for a bit. Why did you decide to sign up, have you ever done this before, just getting to know each other initially ... where we lived and all that. And then eventually we ordered, and I asked her why she picked Basil. I had never been to Basil, but it was good.

Sharon: We both decided pretty quickly to get chicken shawarma. It was his favorite food, so I decided to try it as well. The conversation was really good once it got going. I thought that he was good at directing the conversation. He had a lot of good questions to ask, and it flowed pretty well. We had a lot of similar interests. I thought Cav Daily did a good job of pairing us up based on our interests.

Cary: We just kept talking. She's an SR for Kellogg so we talked about how she does that, how it's a cool experience and all that, and what she does in her spare time and you know majors ... She's Comm School, and two of my roommates are Comm School, so we talked about that because I knew what they were going through last semester. We talked a lot about different vacations we'd been on. We both like kinda the same thing, outdoorsy stuff, so experiences like that.

Sharon: I really liked hearing about his family vacations because my family is really into epic road trips, and he was telling me about his trip to Iceland last summer and how his family visits Canada and Maine a lot. We also shared our mild obsession for watching the Olympics, and we're both really excited that they're about to start. We had similar interests in movies and TV. We talked about reality TV for a little bit and all the terrible things that MTV puts out but that we both admitted to having watched. Although he says he doesn't watch "Jersey Shore," I think he secretly wants to.

Cary: We had a lot in common. We both like being outdoors and we talked about TV shows and movies. We both like a lot of the same ones. She really likes Will Ferrell movies and I do too ... and "Arrested Development." That was cool to have in common. She seemed really casual and cool and that's what I'm into so that was cool. Hiking and outdoors stuff was the big one probably.

Sharon: There weren't really any dull moments, and we were there for a pretty long time. About two hours. There weren't really any awkward pauses. I had fun. It was a really good date; he was really easy to talk to. We shared a good conversation and good food. I had a good time.

Cary: I'm not really the type of person who gets chatty with people I just met but the conversation went pretty well. It jumped around a bit but it was good. I had a good time. Basil was a new place so that was a good experience, too.

Sharon: He was actually going to a second dinner afterward, which I thought was kind of funny. He was meeting friends somewhere for a going-away party. We walked up the Corner and hugged goodbye and I basically just said, "You have my number if you want to contact me again," and we left it at that.

Cary: We ended up running into each other late that night at a party on 14th Street, so that was pretty cool. It turns out she knows a couple of my friends so we talked about that a little more later that night and hung out a little bit then, too.

Sharon: I would say it was probably a 7. It was a good date. It was above average and really fun. He's someone I would like to get to know more.

Cary: I'd say it was like an 8. I mean, we had a good time talking and all that. It wasn't at all awkward and we had a lot in common. I don't know how much we really connected as far as future dates are concerned but I definitely would be willing to see her again. That'd be cool.

Sharon and Cary are now Facebook friends but haven't called or texted yet. Cary said, "I might. We'll see"
