This letter is in response to Dan Stalcup's "Best of the Decade: Athletes," Feb. 24). While I appreciate the difficultly in compiling a list that spans 23 sports and 10 years and have enjoyed reading Stalcup's articles over the past few weeks, I do believe that there was one oversight in terms of athletes included. That oversight was Scott Moore, former U.Va. wrestler and current associate head coach. Moore transferred after three seasons at Penn State with one year of eligibility left. Before Moore began competition at Virginia in 2003-04, the season record for pins at U.Va. was 11, and the career record was 23. In a single season, "Kingpin" racked up 34 pins while compiling a 51-1 record. He held the no. 1 national ranking for the majority of the season before losing in the national semi-finals to the eventual champion and placing 3rd overall, Virginia's second-highest placing ever. Moore led the nation in both pins and wins that season. While I do believe that his not being included was simply an oversight, not recognizing such a great athlete would truly be a glaring omission from your otherwise impressive list of athletes.
