After up-and-down start, Virginia seeks consistency

The Cavalier softball team will hit the road today for a doubleheader against in-state rival Hampton.

Virginia (4-7) travels to Hampton (3-7) after a 2-2 performance in its own Cavalier Invitational and looks to steady its early season play.

A key to the Cavaliers' success will be the continued development of pitcher Melanie Mitchell. The talented freshman has shown flashes of dominance this season but is still looking for consistency.\nVirginia also will turn to senior Nicole Koren on the mound, whose strong performance last weekend earned her an All-Tournament distinction. Koren has shined both offensively and defensively this season, while leading the team in both homeruns and ERA among starters.

Koren started and pitched two innings during last season's 4-2 win against the Pirates. Each of Virginia's other three pitchers made appearances during that game, as well. Virginia's pitchers will look to slow down Hampton's Rebecca Magett and Sharde' Estep, both of whom are hitting more than .400 on the season.

The Pirates are returning home after a 1-3 showing in the Aggies Tournament last weekend. Despite the team's low finish, sophomore pitcher Travonna Byrd was named to the All-Tournament team and will be a formidable foe for the Cavalier bats.

Virginia will hope to capitalize on Hampton's struggles at home this season. The team is winless in its four home games this season, and Virginia will look to push that streak to six this afternoon. The first game will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the second at 3 p.m.
