Publishing endorsements for the Honor and UJC Chair positions last week ("Leading the pack," March 4) was a huge mistake that The Cavalier Daily should admit to and apologize for, both to the candidates they wronged and to the readership. For one thing, The Cavalier Daily did not interview every viable candidate for the position - the editors only interviewed candidates running unopposed races. There are strong potential candidates for both positions from other schools where uncontested races were run. Furthermore, the endorsements were published before the elections were even over in three schools (Batten, Curry, Medicine) which blatantly shows that The Cavalier Daily editorial staff did not consider all the possible candidates.
Michael Chapman, the current UJC Chair, ran an uncontested election from Curry and was selected as Chair. Had he been running in this election, he would have had no opportunity to be endorsed by The Cavalier Daily. Though The Cavalier Daily will not always endorse the winning candidate, it should certainly give all the candidates a shot to be endorsed.
Furthermore, The Cavalier Daily should not shoot itself in the foot by pissing off someone who might be the next UJC Chair or Honor Chair without even interviewing them. What The Cavalier Daily did looks bad, and it's philosophically wrong. I hope you will publish an apology and, if you intend to influence the selection of a new Chair to each of these organizations, then you should include all the possible candidates next time.
