Council prepares to transition leadership

As Nelson administration comes to close, board discusses past achievements, future goals to improve student life

As Student Council President John Nelson's administration comes to an end at this evening's transition ceremony, Council members continue to reflect on past efforts and acknowledge their future goals to improve both outreach and student life at the University.

Nikhil Panda, outgoing Council vice president of administration, said recruitment was particularly successful this year.

"We tried to hit as many organizations as we could ... so they could have a voice on Student Council and so we could represent their communities as well as we could," Panda said. "That was a great starting point for us in terms of outreach."

Panda added that the revamped contracted independent organization consultant program also aided Council's outreach efforts this year.

"The CIO consultant program has done wonders in bridging the gap between students and Student Council," Panda said. "The way it was supposed to work was that if a CIO had any questions regarding its rights or responsibilities as an contracted independent organization, they'd approach a CIO consultant. And if they had any questions about possible co-sponsorships with Student Council they'd check in with the representative."

Panda added the consultant program helped strengthen Council's internal structure and acquainted the appropriations side with programming aspects. Nelson added that SpeakUpUVA has enabled Council to reach out to students in a novel way.

"SpeakUpUVA has been very successful forum for exchanging ideas," Nelson said. "It's been a great way for us to discover new issues and to let students know about things that we're doing."

Council's Building and Grounds Committee made use of the Web site as a resource for many of its initiatives this year, Committee Co-Chair Kate Hartmann said, such as the extending hours at Wilsdorf and West Range Caf
