The No. 2 Virginia baseball team completed its second ACC series sweep on the season this past weekend against Maryland at College Park.
The Cavaliers (34-9, 15-6 ACC) won game one 5-1 behind a modest nine hits and 7.2 outstanding innings of six-hit, one-run baseball from sophomore Danny Hultzen for his sixth victory this year.\nThen Virginia exploded for 27 runs on 28 hits during the back end of Friday's doubleheader. The scoring total marked the third-most runs in an ACC game in program history and the most by any ACC team this season.
Sophomore infielder Steven Proscia, who went 5-for-11 with six RBIs on the series, belted two home runs, while junior first baseman Kenny Swab and junior left fielder John Barr each posted four hits. Swab also drove in four and hit two of Virginia's 10 doubles on the game - the most by any ACC team this season.
By the end of a six-run eighth inning - which was highlighted by a two-run double by Hultzen - the Cavaliers had gone through the batting order a whopping seven times. Junior pitcher Robert Morey tossed seven innings, allowing only three hits, while senior Neal Davis finished the game out of the bullpen to complete the 27-4 victory against the Terrapins (15-28, 4-17 ACC).
Junior pitcher Cody Winiarski dominated during the rubber match Saturday, logging a career-high eight innings and allowing only one run and one walk on five hits as the Cavaliers cruised to an 11-2 victory. Virginia stroked five doubles, and Swab, who finished the series 7-for-15 at the plate with eight runs and six RBIs, hit his fourth home run on the season. Every Virginia starter had at least one hit in the series finale.
