Following its 12th Jefferson Cup title, the Virginia volleyball team ended its West Coast weekend excursion with a disappointing 0-3 record.
Going 25-19, 25-20, 27-25, the Cavaliers were handed their second loss on the season by No. 25 San Diego Thursday night. Sophomore middle hitter Jessica O'Shoney led the Cavaliers with 10 kills and five blocks, while senior defensive specialist A.J. Cushman anchored the defense with 14 digs.
Following Thursday's match, the Cavaliers could not overcome early runs by the No. 8 USC Trojans, losing sets 25-15, 25-16 and 25-16.
Virginia finished the weekend with another 0-3 loss to No. 23 Long Beach State Saturday. The Cavaliers began the match with momentum, coming within two points to lose the first set 26-24. The next two echoed scores from earlier during the weekend, 25-16 and 25-18. The dynamic duo of junior outside hitter Simone Asque and O'Shoney carried the offensive effort with eight and seven kills, respectively. Defensively, freshman middle hitter Mallory Woolridge had a team-high four blocks.
Virginia looks to rebound as it returns home this weekend to host the Marriott Cavalier Classic at Memorial Gymnasium, featuring teams from George Mason, Virginia Tech, Stony Brook and Towson.
