Squad falls late against West Virgina

The No. 5 Virginia women's soccer team lost its first match of the season Sunday, falling 1-0 to West Virginia on an 83rd-minute goal.

Keeping with the theme of the season, the Cavaliers (6-1-1) started slowly and were held scoreless during the first half. As during its previous seven games, however, Virginia turned it on during the second half. Both of the Cavaliers' leading scorers, senior forward Meghan Lencyzk and senior midfielder Sinead Farrelly, had second-half scoring chances that got by the keeper, only to be saved off the line by a defender. Virginia held a 14-5 shot advantage but could not find the net and was shut out for the first time this season.
