The Virginia volleyball team (10-11, 4-7 ACC) split the weekend in North Carolina, beating N.C. State 3-1 Friday night before falling 3-0 to North Carolina Saturday.\nThe Cavaliers claimed victory Friday with set scores of 25-18, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-17.
During the first set, Virginia quickly pulled ahead 10-7. The Cavaliers extended their lead to 23-16, and finished 25-18 after two service errors by the Wolfpack.
But unable to maintain momentum, the squad then went down 6-0 at the start of the second set. After five tie scores throughout the match, N.C. State scored five unanswered points to win 20-25.\nSets three and four were controlled by the Cavaliers, who went on to grab their fourth conference victory.
The team performed well offensively, using a balanced attack that was filled in by four different players. Sophomore middle hitter Jessica O'Shoney knocked down 12 kills, hitting .474. Freshman outside hitter McKenzie Adams earned her third collegiate double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Junior outside hitter Simone Asque and senior middle hitter Sydney Hill contributed 10 and nine kills, respectively.
Meanwhile, on the defensive end, senior defensive specialist A.J. Cushman tallied 14 digs, and O'Shoney had a match-high nine blocks.
But the team could not maintain momentum from the win going into Saturday night at Chapel Hill.
The scores remained close with Virginia falling short 23-25, 21-25 and 22-25. Asque led the offense with 11 kills, and redshirt sophomore setter Beth Wildermuth had her fourth collegiate double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs.
The Cavaliers return home this weekend to face both Miami and Florida State for the second time this season.
