Disabilities Awareness Week will highlight the importance of making Grounds accessible to all students

Have you ever thought of what your college experience would be like if you could not spend a pleasant, sunny day on every part of the Lawn in between classes? Or be able to enjoy the hyped atmosphere in the student section at a basketball game? Many people may not realize it, but for some University students with disabilities, these experiences are privileges that they unfortunately cannot enjoy. Now, the obvious must be stated: It is wrong for any student to have these opportunities take the form of privileges and not rights.

The University has made efforts to accommodate disabled students by improving access to facilities on Grounds. The Learning Needs and Evaluation Center (LNEC) is one resource to help these students. LNEC helps those who have learning, physical, medical and emotional disabilities. Often, people think only of physical disabilities, but learning, medical and emotional disabilities are common. The University has introduced a number of initiatives that help people with disabilities, but there is always room for improvement. For students with physical disabilities, a major issue is accessibility to places across Grounds and in nearby locations. An integral part of the University experience is the ability to travel freely across Grounds, absorbing all of the University's rich history. How can physically disabled students do that
