Advocates of increased government spending are ignoring the need for fiscal responsibility

The Fifth District congressional race has, unsurprisingly, been largely dominated by the struggle between two competing views about the proper size and scope of the federal government. Given the dire nature of America's fiscal situation, much of the current debate - both in congressional and other races - about the size of government has coalesced around the need for fiscal responsibility.\nThe current size and growth of government, from a fiscal perspective, are unsustainable.

America's current fiscal state is alarming on two levels. In the short-term, federal spending is ballooning and will be accompanied by a variety of tax increases that will depress already weak growth. Federal spending for fiscal year 2010 was $3.5 trillion and the federal deficit was $1.3
