The Corner is always great for the people, atmosphere and especially food, but dining out constantly can be tough with a college budget. Not to worry - The Cavalier Daily researched a few student's favorite Corner munchies for those times you are short on cash but have a serious craving. We'll show how to recreate Mellow Mushroom's Kosmic Karma Pizza, Boylan Heights' Sweet Potato Fries and Arch's Black Caesar Archer.
A 12-inch Kosmic Karma at Mellow Mushroom is $9.25, and when you add tax and tip, your total will be about $11.20. If your sweet tooth kicks in after dinner, a small Black Caesar at Arch's will cost $5.09 plus tax. Then for a late-night snack, some of your favorite sweet potato fries at Boylan Heights will hit your wallet for $3.14. So by the end of the night your tummy is satisfied, but you're out about $20.
When this is more than your budget can spare, the best way to save money is to go grocery shopping with your friends and make these foods in larger quantities.
By cooking it yourself, you can make two Kosmic Karmas for $8.14 a pie, or about 51 cents per slice. For such an intricate-looking pizza, the directions are surprisingly simple:
Ingredients:\n2 boxes Jiffy Pizza Crust Mix\n1 jar pizza sauce\n1 jar sundried tomatoes\n1 4-oz container of feta cheese\n1 8-oz bag of shredded mozzarella\n1 medium-size tomato\n1 small bag of baby spinach\n1 jar of pesto
Follow the directions on the pizza crust box for baking and preparation of the dough. Pour half of the jar of sauce onto the pizza dough and spread evenly with a spoon. Slice five to six sundried tomatoes into thin strips and sprinkle them evenly onto the sauce and dough. Then sprinkle a handful of spinach on top of the sundried tomatoes. Cover these toppings with about half of the container of feta and half of the bag of mozzarella. Then place five to six thin slices of tomato in a circle on the pizza. Finish by spooning pesto onto the pizza in a thin, spiral pattern. Follow the rest of the baking instructions on the crust box. Repeat with the second pizza.
Following the recipe below, you can make a little more than six 8-ounce servings of the Black Caesar Archer for about $9.07, or $1.51 per serving.\n\nIngredients:\n48-oz. container of vanilla frozen\nyogurt\n1 box Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies\n1 package breakable chocolate chip\ncookie dough squares\n1 4.25 oz. Reese's Candy Bar - buying\nit in bar form instead of the traditional\ncups is cheaper but has the same taste\n1 bottle Smucker's Magic Shell Choco\nlate Syrup
Cut two Cosmic Brownies into 24 half inch squares, break apart the squares of the Reese's bar, and break off eight squares of cookie dough. Divide the ingredients in half. Empty half the frozen yogurt into a blender or food processor and add in half of the prepared ingredients. Blend until the ingredients are chopped up and evenly dispersed pausing at intervals to add three large squirts (about 1/3 cup) of magic shell syrup to the mixture. Repeat with the other ingredients. Scoop into small bowls and serve.
The last snack on our list is by far the easiest to make. Although the price of produce varies, three medium- to large-size sweet potatoes will usually cost about $2.40. For that price, you can easily make nine generous servings of sweet potato fries at 27 cents per serving.
Ingredients:\n3 medium to large sweet potatoes\nAny non-stick cooking spray\nSalt\nPepper
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut the potatoes into strips, about three inches long and 1/4-inch wide. Lightly spray them with non-stick cooking spray, sprinkle with salt and pepper, then toss. Lightly coat a cookie sheet with the non-stick spray and spread the fries evenly on it. Bake 12-15 minutes, turning them over halfway through until fries become crisp.\nIn addition to cooking your favorite munchies for yourself, you can also save money by shopping smart with your ingredients. Planning ahead always helps. Keep an eye out for the grocery stores that are having sales or offer special member discounts. Ask about getting a student discount in addition to the regular shopper savings cards - many stores in the area offer them. Lastly, try to buy generic when possible. Same taste for a lower price!
