Virginia men's basketball coach Tony Bennett started the season with six promising freshman. Now, he only has five.
Freshman guard Billy Baron recently informed the Cavaliers he will be leaving the team this semester and transferring to Rhode Island. Baron is a Rhode Island native and his father coaches the Rams's basketball team. Baron's brother, Jimmy, graduated from Rhode Island in 2008 with the most three-pointers made in Atlantic 10 Conference history. Billy Baron joins former Cavaliers Tristan Spurlock and Jeff Jones as the third player to transfer from Virginia during Bennett's two-year tenure.
Baron's Virginia career began with promise. He electrified Cavalier fans during his first start, scoring 19 points while going 5-for-6 from three-point range against William & Mary. Baron followed that strong shooting performance with a well-rounded effort the next game, torching USC Upstate for 14 points, two steals, three rebounds and three assists.
Baron's playing time has declined steadily throughout the season, however, and dwindled to nearly nothing during conference play. The guard has played just 18 total minutes during Virginia's eight ACC games thus far, and did not enter five of the Cavaliers' last nine contests. Baron also remained on the bench during Virginia's past two outings.
Baron will close his Cavalier career having played 17 games and averaging 3 points per game.
