Cavs prepare to battle Blue Jays

The No. 2 Virginia men's lacrosse team has no time to rest on its laurels after defeating No. 20 Ohio State 14-11 at home March 19.

Saturday, the Cavaliers (7-1) travel to Baltimore to battle No. 11 Johns Hopkins for the sixth edition of the Doyle Smith Cup. The Blue Jays (5-2) hold the all-time edge in the series, 54-28-1, but Virginia has dominated the rivalry in recent years and has won the last six contests between the two traditional lacrosse powerhouses - including the last two at Homewood Field.

Johns Hopkins recently suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 loss at No. 1 Syracuse in double overtime March 19, but the Cavaliers - who also fell to the Orange in early March - know the Blue Jays boast plenty of talent across the board and especially in net.

Sophomore goalie Pierce Bassett has shut the door on opponents all season and kept Johns Hopkins close against Syracuse with 16 saves, including 14 during the second half. Finding a way to score early and often against Bassett - who leads the nation with a 4.71 goals against average and .683 save percentage - will be paramount for a Virginia offense led by junior attacker Chris Bocklett's team-high 22 goals.

Faceoff is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday.
