With freshman Alex Domijan out of the lineup, the No. 2 Virginia men's tennis ran into trouble against No. 6 Texas Sunday before battling back in singles play to capture the victory, 5-2. The Cavaliers also defeated No. 32 Oklahoma Friday by the same score.
The Longhorns (12-4) clinched the doubles point with a narrow 9-7 win against senior Michael Shabaz and junior Drew Courtney, the No. 3-ranked doubles team in the country. In singles play, four Virginia players lost the first set, but senior Sanam Singh, sophomore Julen Uriguen and freshman Justin Shane each rolled in the final two sets to earn comeback victories and a 5-2 win for the Cavaliers.
Against Oklahoma (8-3) Friday, Virginia (18-0, 3-0 ACC) captured the doubles point with a tiebreaker win at the No. 3 doubles position. Shane lost his first singles match this season at the No. 5 singles position, and sophomore Jarmere Jenkins struggled at No. 4 singles, losing the first set, 7-5. Jenkins rallied, though, taking the second set in a tiebreak, and then the third, 6-4.
The Cavaliers will complete their 11-match road trip this weekend against No. 25 Miami and No. 45 Florida State before returning home to face No. 10 Duke April 1 at the Snyder Tennis Center.
