Cavs claim series, conference lead

The No. 1 Virginia baseball team took two of three road games against No. 8 Georgia Tech this past weekend as the Cavaliers took sole possession of first place in the Coastal Division. Junior pitcher Danny Hultzen tied the school record for most career wins Friday as he allowed one earned run through eight innings. Virginia (31-3, 13-2 ACC) trailed 1-0 in the seventh, but senior right fielder David Coleman smacked a three-run, go-ahead homer during that frame and the Cavaliers held on for a 6-2 opening win. Virginia clinched the series with a 12-9 win Saturday. The Cavalier hitters exploded for a five-run fifth inning, but Georgia Tech (24-9, 12-3 ACC) responded with three runs during the bottom of the frame and threatened to score more. Junior pitcher Justin Thompson escaped a bases-loaded jam and then worked into the ninth, striking out a career-high eight batters through 4.1 innings to earn the win.

The Cavaliers fell just short of the sweep Sunday as the Yellow Jackets prevailed, 10-8. Virginia mounted a ninth-inning comeback as Coleman drove in junior catcher John Hicks to pull within two. The Cavaliers then put runners on first and second with one out but could not push across the tying runs.

Virginia returns home for two midweek contests. The team hosts Georgetown at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
