Seminoles snatch tournament win

The No. 11 Virginia women's tennis team bowed out of the ACC Tournament Friday afternoon as the squad suffered a narrow 4-3 loss against No. 18 Florida State.

The Cavaliers (18-7, 7-5 ACC) had earned a first-round bye after placing No. 4 in the conference and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Virginia won the first two doubles matches.

But Florida State (14-7, 9-4 ACC) quickly evened the score by claiming a victory on the No. 3 court. The score did not remain knotted up for long, however, as No. 28 junior Lindsey Hardenbergh registered a 6-2, 6-3 win at the top singles spot against No. 35 senior Katie Rybakova.

No. 52 junior Emily Fraser also added a point for the Cavaliers at the No. 2 position to help Virginia take a 3-2 lead with just two matches left to be decided.

The Seminoles came out firing, however, as the final matches went into third sets. Freshman Caryssa Peretz fell 6-3 during the last frame before the Seminoles earned the decisive point on the No. 4 court against sophomore Erin Vierra. Both Peretz and Vierra had put together solid second sets but failed to replicate their dominant play during the third frame to propel their team to a spot in the semifinals.

The Cavaliers now wait to see if they have earned a NCAA Tournament bid. Selections will be announced May 2.
