What do Will Arnett, Zooey Deschanel, Ashton Kutcher, Amy Poehler and Sofia Vergara have in common? They'll all be in attendance at television's biggest night, which is right around the corner. With the Emmys coming up Sept. 18 on NBC, here are tableau's predictions of who will walk away with the gold statue in some of the top categories - and, just as importantly, who should.
OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES:
Nominated: Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife and Mad Men\nShould Win: I would love to see Friday Night Lights take the top prize; Lights perennially has been one of the most underrated shows on television, and it just completed an epic final season that solidified its place in TV history.\nWill Win: Chances are that Mad Men will win; it's a consistent show with a strong cast and never ceases to please viewers. The fresh faces of Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones will provide some competition but probably not enough to take the win from the stalwart Mad Men.
OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES:
Nominated: Big Bang Theory, Glee, Modern Family, The Office, Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock\nShould Win: The Office featured Steve Carell's emotional goodbye and the end of the show as we know it, but this season was lacking in the laugh department. The inclusion of Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock pits SNL alums and good friends Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's raucous comedies against one another. Although both series are smart enough to warrant a win, four-time category winner 30 Rock deserves to add another statue to its collection.\nWill Win: Modern Family. Family had a great sophomore season, and it is just too good - and relatable - not to win. The goofy but sharp comedy has the ratings and fan support to sway the Emmy voters in its direction.
OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA:
Nominated: Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Hugh Laurie (House) and Timothy Olyphant (Justified)\nShould Win: Although we would love to see Chandler finally win an Emmy for his work as Coach Eric Taylor, Buscemi deserves the award for his astonishing ability to portray the complicated facets of his Boardwalk Empire character in an inspiring, empathetic way.\nWill Win: Hamm will walk away with the award after losing to Bryan Cranston three times. Hamm deserves to finally take the golden statue; Don Draper has become a classic character, and Hamm portrays him perfectly.
OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA:
Nominated: Kathy Bates (Harry's Law), Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), Mireille Enos (The Killing), Mariska Hargitay (Law and Order: SVU), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)\nShould Win: Moss is profoundly underrated and has been deserving for years, but Britton gave viewers a window into one of the most realistic television marriages in recent history in Friday Night Lights's last season.\nWill Win: Margulies' turn as the embattled wife of a politician has both the critical acclaim and the ratings clout of the typical Emmy winner.
