Squad bests Bearcats, Badgers

The No. 16 Virginia men's soccer team concluded the Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational with two wins in as many games this weekend. Virginia earned a 1-0 victory against Cincinnati Friday night and topped Wisconsin 4-2 Sunday afternoon.

Friday, the Cavaliers (3-1-0) seemingly battled two opponents simultaneously - Cincinnati and the weather - as play was twice suspended because of thunderstorms. The game was concluded in the 86th minute after an hour-long delay with the Cavaliers ahead 1-0.

Junior forward Will Bates scored the game's lone goal in the 60th minute on a 12-yard volley after a crossing pass by sophomore midfielder Brian Span. Freshman goalie Spencer LaCivita made three saves to earn his first career shutout.

Against Wisconsin, Virginia trailed 1-0 at halftime but roared back with four second-half goals. Freshman midfielder Eric Bird tied the score in the 62nd minute, senior forward Brian Ownby scored twice and Bates tacked on the final goal with his fourth strike of the season.

The Cavaliers finished the tournament as the only undefeated team. Ownby was named tournament MVP while Bates, Span and junior midfielder Ari Dimas joined him on the all-tournament squad.
