Team tops Miami, drops to Spartans

The No. 7 Virginia field hockey team lost its third game of the regular season this past weekend, marking its worst start since 2005. The squad beat Miami 2-1 in dramatic fashion Friday before being shut out 3-0 by Michigan State Saturday.

The Cavaliers (4-3) came out firing Friday and netted their first goal only eight minutes into the game when junior forward Britt Knouse scored her third goal of the season off an assist from freshman midfielder Jess Orrett. Virginia outshot Miami 8-2 but went into halftime up only 1-0.

The RedHawks (1-5) evened the scored on a 51st-minute goal from junior midfielder Olivia Miller, and neither team managed to break away for much of the second half. The game appeared destined for overtime until freshman forward Jessica White scored the game-winning goal - her first for Virginia - with only a minute left in the game to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 win.

The team then struggled against Michigan State Saturday as the Spartans (2-5) struck first in the 28th minute on a goal from freshman forward Abby Barker and added another in the final minute of the first half to end the half up 2-0. Virginia nearly matched Michigan State with eight shots on target to the Spartans' nine, but failed to crack the scoreboard. The Spartans added an insurance goal late in the second half to seal their first win of the season.
