The Virginia field hockey team suffered a tough loss Saturday, falling against Wake Forest 5-0 to remain winless in conference play.
The Cavaliers (7-11, 0-4 ACC) could not find an offensive spark during the early going of the weekend matchup, taking only four shots in comparison to the Demon Deacons' 10 during the first half. Wake Forest (8-8, 1-3 ACC) struck first on a 14th-minute goal from sophomore back Molly Murphy. Junior midfielder Lizzie Rae added two goals of her own during the 19th and 31st minutes to give the Demon Deacons a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The second half proved equally as unfavorable for the Cavaliers, who fired off only two shots during the entire period and failed to break through on the scoreboard. The Demon Deacons, meanwhile, recorded two more goals against senior goalkeeper Adrienne Ostroff, who came off the bench to relieve freshman Jenny Johnstone.
With the win, Wake Forest extended its winning streak to six games and notched its first ACC victory of the year. Virginia, meanwhile, currently sits dead last in the ACC standings as the only team without a conference win. The Cavaliers will have a chance to capture a conference win next weekend as they welcome Duke to town for their final regular season game.
