Against an impressive field, the Virginia men's and women's cross country teams held their own at the Paul Short Invitational with 10th- and 5th-place performances, respectively. In a race featuring numerous top-ranked teams, the No. 19 men and No. 16 women kept pace well enough to merit confidence in their early-season form.
The women finished with 152 points and showed strong depth with a miniscule 32-second spread - the second lowest of the 45 teams that competed. Led by senior Morgane Gay's 10th-place time of 20:55 on the six-kilometer course, Virginia came within 11 points of fourth-place finisher Georgetown - the top-ranked women's squad in the country.
In the men's eight-kilometer race, Virginia benefitted from two runners in the top 15, but had a steep dropoff to its next three runners. Senior Mark Amirault and sophomore Chris Foley led the way in 12th and 13th places with times of 24:29 and 24:32, respectively. Sophomore Drew Paisley, junior Robby Andrews and junior David Wilson also helped to bring the team's total score to 298.
The women's title was claimed by No. 3 Providence, while the men's competition was won by No. 4 Oklahoma.
The Cavaliers will make their next appearance Oct. 14 at the Panorama Farms Invitational.
