'Mannequin' goes on display

Andrew McMahon

Since its formation in 2004, Jack's Mannequin has experienced its fair share of ups and downs. Early in its career, the band endured a tumultuous start when lead vocalist and songwriter Andrew McMahon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Fortunately, the triumphant McMahon made a full recovery, and the band has since released two successful studio albums. With the recent release of the band's third album, People and Things, Jack's Mannequin shows musical growth and proves to be just as strong-willed as ever.

Although the title may seem vague on the surface, People and Things contains many layers and deeper meanings within its cheery pop melodies. For avid fans, the opening track, "My Racing Thoughts," is reminiscent of the band's earlier work on 2005 debut album Everything in Transit. The song begins with the harmonious sounds of piano chords and drumbeats blended neatly with McMahon's crooning voice, making it the perfect song to start a fresh, new day - or a fresh, new album.

The first standout track comes in the form of "Television," a surprise stunner with a gradual build-up that escalates into a soaring and exciting climax which has McMahon belting out "And what if you could move the needle to a more forgiving song/ And what if this was never really broken all along." Switching gears. "Hey Hey Hey (We're All Gonna Die)," may leave listeners perplexed. Upon first listen, it sounds like a typical pop-rock anthem, but close attention to the lyrics reveal an underlying story, presumably referencing McMahon's experience with leukemia.

Unfortunately, the album then dives into a lull with a number of forgettable songs like the stale "People, Running" and "Platform Fire." The choruses of these tracks are much too repetitive to remain interesting and simply fall flat relative to the rest of the album. However, redemption is found in "Restless Dream," a refreshing, albeit surprising detour from the band's pop-rock sound into the world of folk. With only McMahon's voice accompanied by an acoustic guitar
