Johnstone earns ACC player of week honors

The Virginia field hockey team enjoyed its second success in the past three days when freshman goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone earned ACC Co-Player of the Week honors yesterday.

Johnstone backstopped the Cavaliers (8-11, 1-4 ACC) to a stunning 3-2 penalty strokes victory against No. 6 Duke Saturday at the University Hall Turf Field, Virginia's first ACC victory of the year.

The freshman stymied the potent Blue Devil offense by recording a career-best 14 saves, the most by any goalie in the conference this season.

Johnstone's 14-save effort brings her season total to 80 saves against 49 goals allowed. She now has started all but two of the Cavaliers' 19 games this season and sports a .620 save percentage and seven wins, one by shutout.

Virginia will need another mammoth effort in the cage from Johnstone at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, when the Cavaliers again clash with Duke in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship in College Park, Md.
