Cuccinelli to run for governor

Attorney general will make formal announcement in 2012, challenge lieutenant governor

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli plans to announce his intentions to run for governor in 2013, according to a statement his office released yesterday.

"At some point in 2012 I will more formally announce that I will seek to succeed [Gov. Bob] McDonnell in the 2013 election, and continue his positive record of pursuing opportunity for all Virginians," he said.

Cuccinelli will run for the seat against Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling.

In an email statement, McDonell said he "respects the right of the attorney general to make his own decision regarding future races," though he will support Bolling in the race.

Bolling allowed McDonnell to run unopposed for governor in 2009 on the condition that Bolling would have McDonnell's full support in the 2013 Republican primary, Larry Sabato, director of the University's Center for Politics, said in an email. "But McDonnell will be adversely affected if Bolling loses so he'll have to put real effort into the contest to choose his successor."

He added that Cuccinelli could defeat Bolling.

"Cuccinelli is the favorite of many of the GOP's most ardent activists and interest groups," he said.

Terry McAucliffe is the only Democrat who has announced plans to run for governor, The Washington Post reported.
