Chiariello bests record

One day after senior Vincenzo Chiariello opened the Penn State National Invitational with a record performance for the Virginia track and field team in the weight throw, senior Marcus Robinson set a new school record in the triple jump. During the two-day meet the Cavaliers achieved several personal-bests in their second outing led by new head coach Brian Fetzer.

Friday Chiariello recorded a throw of 63 feet-7 inches to finish fifth in the men's weight throw, breaking his own Virginia record set in 2011. Senior Maureen Laffan placed second in the women's event with a mark of 60 feet-10 inches.

The men's distance medley relay team of sophomore Anthony Kostelac, junior Lance Roller, and seniors Kevin Anding and Mark Amirault also notched a runner-up finish with a time of 9 minutes, 42.97 seconds.

Robinson highlighted a strong closing day of the meet with his jump of 53 feet-5 3/4 inches - the longest by anyone in the country so far this season. The feat topped a school record that had been held for 35 years, allowing Robinson to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship meet in March.

Junior Dallas Rose won the women's triple jump, and Laffan claimed another runner-up finish in the shot put to wrap up the meet.
