Employee suffers injury

The Charlottesville Fire Department rescued a male construction worker trapped on scaffolding in the Alderman Road dormitory housing construction site Tuesday afternoon.

Deputy Fire Chief Britt Grimm said the worker injured his leg when a wooden plank in the scaffolding broke, leaving him unable to travel down the ladder to the ground.

Once the fire crew arrived at Tree House Drive at 1:14 p.m., Grimm said his team ascended the ladder to assess the worker's injuries and determine the "safest method of getting him down."

"They used what we call a stokes basket," Grimm said. "It's like a plastic, almost body-shaped shallow basket that's pretty secure and easy to move around. And there was a piece of construction equipment nearby, a loader, which they use to lift the boards and equipment up onto the scaffolding. They got him in the stokes basket and sent it over on the loader, and lowered him down to the ground."

Once the worker was safely on the ground, the fire crew transferred him to the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad on site for treatment and transport to the University Medical Center, Grimm said. The Fire Department could not comment on the extent of the worker's injury.
