Squad rallies in consecutive wins

The No. 9 Virginia women's tennis team started the 2012 season with a 4-3 win against No. 18 Tennessee Saturday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The team followed that win with another close 4-3 victory against No. 21 Texas Sunday.

The Cavaliers (2-0) rallied Saturday to beat the pesky Volunteers (0-2) after dropping the doubles point at the start of the day. Senior Emily Fraser - who defeated sophomore Brynn Boren at first singles, 6-4, 6-1 - and sophomore Li Xi - who clinched the Cavalier victory with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against freshman Joanna Henderson, turned around the Cavaliers chances for victory. Virginia also picked up singles points from junior Hana Tomljanovic and sophomore Caryssa Peretz during the comeback.

The following day, Virginia again came close to defeat, falling behind the Longhorns (1-1) 3-0 after dropping the doubles point and its first two singles matches. Despite the daunting task ahead of them, the Cavaliers rallied from behind, winning the next four matches with key victories at first and second singles from Fraser and senior Lindsey Hardenbergh. Junior Erin Vierra sealed the team's overall victory with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 triumph against freshman Lina Padegimaite during the last match.

The Cavaliers return to action Jan. 31, as they will compete in a doubleheader against West Virginia and ACC rival Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
