The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams had a strong showing at the ACC Championships Saturday at Smithfield Plantation in Blacksburg, Va.

Competing against three teams ranked in the top 30, the men’s team finished second overall, a mere six points behind champion Virginia Tech. The Cavalier women earned sixth place with a score of 170, 135 points behind first-place Florida State.

Several Cavaliers earned individual accolades for their performances. Graduate student Catherine White took the silver medal in the six-kilometer race with a time of 20:06, six seconds off the pace set by Florida State senior Violah Lagat. White’s performance earned her an All-Conference selection.

Graduate student Zach Gates finished fourth in the men’s eight kilometer race, crossing the finish line in 23:46. Gates earned All-Conference honors along with teammates sophomore Kyle King and junior Thomas Porter, who finished fifth and 11th respectively. Freshman Connor Rog crossed the line in 18th place, netting him ACC Freshman of the Year honors.

The Cavaliers will host the Virginia/Panorama Farms Open Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
