Tuesday, 5:53 a.m. – Hurricane Sandy closes 37 secondary roads and one primary road in central Virginia— 24 due to flooding and 14 due to blockages, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. -Kaz Komolafe

Tuesday, 3:42 a.m. – More than 5,000 residents in the Albemarle-Charlottesville have lost power. The Emergency Operations Center expects to hear more by daylight.

Monday, 10:22 p.m. – Severe weather brought by Hurricane Sandy has resulted in 17 closed roads in central Virginia, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation — 12 because of floods and five because of blockages.-Kaz Komolafe

Monday, approx. 8:00 p.m – Media outlets report Hurricane Sandy has made landfall in southern New Jersey – Kaz Komolafe


Monday, 7:31 p.m.- The University Hospital will continue to operate normally and libraries and dining halls will reopen tomorrow morning, Executive Vice President Patrick Hogan, the University’s Chief Operating Officer, announced in a University-wide email. N2, the temporary dining facility, will remain closed. “The decision to cancel class on Tuesday does not cancel students’ academic responsibilities,” Hogan said. “We also want to keep as many people as possible off the streets so as not to interfere with public safety officials.” – Michelle Davis

Monday, 5:58 p.m. – Old Dominion Power Spokesperson Greg Edwards said 266 customers, mostly in and around Crozet, are without power in Albemarle County out of a total of 40,000 area customers. 45,026 customers are without power statewide, and 136,881 have been impacted since Saturday afternoon. – Joseph Liss

Monday, 5:35 p.m. – Libraries, including Clemons and Brown, will close at 10 p.m. Monday night. Bus service ends at 10:30 p.m., and Safe Ride will not run, according to U.Va. – Michelle Davis

Monday, 1:49 p.m. – “At this point no decisions have been made about Tuesday’s operations or classes,” University spokesperson McGregor McCance said. The University will “continue to get weather updates and continue to have conference calls after the business day is over,” he said. “We’ll have a decision at some point about tomorrow.”


Monday, 1:42 p.m. – “Our prime request today and tomorrow at the height of the storm is don’t go out,” McDonnell said. “For most of the state the major impacts of the storm are still ahead.” – Joseph Liss

Monday, 1:15 p.m. – Emergency Operations Center Spokesperson Lee Catlin said in an email Charlottesville and Albemarle can expect 1-3 inches of rain with the potential for 3-5 inches. The EOC has been handling emergency coordination in Charlottesville and Albemarle County for Hurricane Sandy since 8am Monday morning. – Joseph Liss
