The Virginia men’s soccer team earned an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament and will host Lafayette, the Patriot League Champions, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Cavaliers (9-6-4, 3-4-1 ACC) were one of five ACC teams selected to the Tournament, Monday. ACC Champion Maryland drew the No. 2 seed, reigning NCAA champion North Carolina received the No. 9 seed and Wake Forest was seeded No. 15. Boston College was the only conference squad beside Virginia to receive entry without a national seed and first-round bye.
Monday’s announcement marked the 32nd consecutive time that Virginia has heard their name called come NCAA Tournament time — the nation’s longest active streak. It will be the Cavaliers 34th overall appearance, including six NCAA Championships, and the program boasts an impressive 52-27-4 all-time record in tournament games.
The Leopards (9-7-4, 3-1-3) upset top-seeded American 2-0 to win the Patriot League and steal their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2005. Junior Alec Golini leads Lafayette with seven goals, and senior caption Kyle Scharfenberg paces the team with nine points and provides a steadying veteran presence in the midfield.
The game will mark the first ever meeting between the two programs.
