Cross-country team captures NCAA Regional

The Virginia men’s cross-country team Friday brought home the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship for the first time in program history.

Graduate student Zach Gates’ fourth-place finish helped the Cavaliers secure 64 points, 11 points better than second-place Eastern Kentucky. Redshirt freshman Kyle King, junior Thomas Porter, graduate student Mark Amirault and sophomore Drew Paisley all placed in the top 20 and joined Gates as All-Southeast Region runners.

“I’m proud of this team,” coach Pete Watson said in a release. “This was a great team effort from all of our guys. We executed the game plan to perfection.”

The women’s team also competed in Charlotte and finished eighth. Graduate student Catherine White led the women’s squad, completing the six-kilometer race in 20 minutes, 22 seconds, earning her fourth place and All-Southeast Region honors. Junior Barbara Strehler finished 20th overall and also earned All-Southeast Region distinctions. Junior Katherine Walker, freshman Audrey Batzel and sophomore Kathleen Stevens rounded out the Cavaliers’ top five.

The men’s team travels to Louisville, Ky. this weekend to contend for the NCAA championship. White will join them, as her excellent finish merited an invitation to compete as an individual.
