With the non-conference slate over, the Virginia volleyball team entered ACC play this weekend for a split result. After falling 3-0 on the road against Duke on Friday, the team swept Wake Forest 3-0 in Winston Salem, N.C. on Saturday.
In the first of two Tobacco Road matchups, the Cavaliers (8-6, 1-1 ACC) could not keep up with the Blue Devils’ (11-2, 2-0 ACC) efficient hitting as they were defeated in straight sets, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17. Virginia hit .193 to Duke’s .286, and no Cavalier had more than 10 kills on the match.
Junior Mallory Woolridge put up a .316 hitting percentage, tallying seven kills with only one attacking error. Sophomore Natalie Bausback contributed a team-high four blocks.
The action continued a day later and 87 miles west against the Demon Deacons (11-3, 0-2 ACC). This time, the Cavaliers turned the tables and won in three sets, 27-25, 25-10 and 25-20. It was Virginia’s first conference road win in almost two years, the last coming on Oct. 15, 2011 against NC State.
Sandwiched between two hard-fought frames, the second set was arguably the Cavaliers’ best of the season so far. They put up a .409 hitting percentage while holding Wake Forest to -.077 en route to a 15-point win. Junior Tori Janowski was the star of the match, recording 14 kills, 11 digs and four service aces — all team highs.
The team goes back on the road next weekend, paying visits to Maryland and Pittsburgh in its second round of ACC matches.
