The Skinny: The No. 4 Virginia field hockey team will be back on the road this weekend when it faces the No. 15 Wake Forest and Liberty. The Cavaliers are coming off a tough three-game home stand in which they were dealt their first loss of the season by No. 1 North Carolina in a 2-1 nail-biter.
The Demon Deacons will be the third ranked opponent the Cavaliers will face in the last week. The last time the teams met, Virginia came away with a 4-0 victory. Although the Flames are unranked and appear to be a reprieve from the high level of competition the Cavaliers have faced recently, they rank in top-50 in nearly every statistical category and pose a formidable threat.
The Cavaliers will be led by senior forward Elly Buckley, who has a team-high 27 points on 11 goals and five assists. Even against the team’s recent stiff competition, Buckley continues to produce and sits atop the conference rankings in goals per game with 1.1.

The Skinny: The Virginia volleyball team kicks off its ACC schedule on the road this weekend with a pair of matches in the Tar Heel State.
Last weekend the Cavaliers (7-5) hosted the Cavalier Classic, defeating Seton Hall, Columbia and William & Mary. Despite playing with a banged up roster, the team grinded through its matches to pull out the three wins, each by a 3-1 score. Senior libero Emily Rottman was named Tournament MVP, while she, freshman outside hitter Haley Kole and junior middle blocker Mallory Woolridge were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Up first this weekend are the Blue Devils, who enter the match with a five-game win streak. In the team’s most recent game, Duke upset then-No. 16 Illinois in Durham, 3-1. Both of the team’s losses came at the hands of current top-10 teams in No. 3 Florida and No. 9 Minnesota. The Blue Devils lead the conference in both assists and kills per set.
The action continues the following day against the Demon Deacons, who have won their last six in a row. They burned through their early season schedule — with their sole loss coming on the road against Cal State Fullerton — but have yet to play a ranked team this year. Wake Forest is led by senior middle blocker Kristin Grissom, who averages 3.31 kills and 1.21 blocks per set.
Virginia will play away again the following weekend, visiting Maryland and Pittsburgh.
