Both Virginia golf teams were in action this weekend, as the No. 14 men won the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn., and the No. 27 women placed 15th at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Trailing archrival Virginia Tech by one stroke entering Sunday, the Cavalier men posted a stellar 13-under 275 to take the 14-team tournament with an 842 total, besting the Hokies by one stroke. Junior Denny McCarthy spearheaded the comeback effort with a six-under 66, finishing tied for second with a career-low 11-under, 205 54-hole total, three strokes lower than his previous best.
Freshman Derek Bard finished right behind McCarthy in fourth place, posting a nine-under 207 total, including an eight-under 64 Saturday.
The women turned in a 895 54-hole total, 38 strokes off first-place Duke, which carded a 857 three-round total and won the 18-team tournament by an 11 stroke margin. Virginia finished ahead of a pair of ACC opponents in North Carolina and Notre Dame, but behind the Blue Devils, Clemson, Wake Forest and NC State.
One of the few highlights for the women was the play of senior Portland Rosen, who finished eighth at one-under 215. Junior Briana Mao was the only other Cavalier to place in the top-50, coming in at No. 48 with a nine-over 225.
The men will return to action Friday at the U.S. Collegiate in Alpharetta, Ga. The women will take the course again Oct. 25 at the Landfall Classic in Wilmington, N.C.
