Football

What: Virginia (2-5, 0-3 ACC) vs. Georgia Tech (4-3, 3-2 ACC)

Where: Scott Stadium

When: Saturday, 12:30 p.m.

The Skinny: Trying to snap a four-game losing streak, Virginia will face Georgia Tech in its annual Homecomings game. The Yellow Jackets come into Charlottesville fresh off a 56-0 win against Syracuse, which snapped a three-game losing streak of their own.

The Yellow Jacket offense — one of the most prolific in college football — ranks fifth nationally in rushing yards and is in the top 30 in scoring. Georgia Tech uses its unique triple option offense, which features dynamic playmakers at multiple positions, to dominate the ground game.

Dual-threat Yellow Jacket sophomore quarterback Vad Lee is not only the team’s leading passer, but also the team’s second leading rusher. Lee came into the season as a proven ball-carrier, but he has been given more leeway to use his arm this year, throwing for twice as many touchdowns in seven games this season as he did in all of 2012.

Saturday’s game comes at a crucial point in the season for the Cavaliers. After facing Georgia Tech, Virginia takes on three ranked opponents — No. 9 Clemson, No. 7 Miami and No. 14 Virginia Tech — in its last four games.

Despite entering the game as 10-point underdogs, Virginia may have history on its side. In 14 meetings between the two teams at Scott Stadium all-time, the Cavaliers owns a 10-3-1 record.

Women’s Soccer

What: No. 1 Virginia (16-0-0, 10-0-0 ACC) vs. Miami (8-6-1, 3-6-1 ACC), No. 8 Florida State (13-0-3, 8-0-2 ACC)

When: Thursday, 7 p.m. (Miami); Sunday 2 p.m. (Florida State)

Where: Klöckner Stadium
The Skinny: The No. 1 Virginia women’s soccer team will look for its school-record 17th-consecutive victory Thursday against Miami when it opens its final homestand of the regular season. The Cavaliers will next face Florida State Sunday before closing their regular season slate against Virginia Tech Oct. 31.

Although their record places them in the bottom tier of the ACC, the Hurricanes have shown an ability to contend with top teams. Earlier this month, Miami earned an impressive 2-0 victory against then-No. 3 Notre Dame, whom the Cavaliers defeated in double-overtime earlier this month. Overall, the Hurricanes have been shut out six times this season by ACC opponents and are 1-8-1 all-time against Virginia.

The Cavaliers will face the only other unbeaten team in the country Sunday when they host No. 8 Florida State. The Seminoles were ranked as high as third nationally earlier this season and are just four points behind the Cavaliers in the ACC standings. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Wys leads the ACC with 10 shutouts.

Florida State won the regular season matchup against Virginia last season, 1-0, but the Cavaliers redeemed themselves in the ACC tournament and sent the Seminoles packing with a 4-2 victory.

Men’s Soccer

What: No. 23 Virginia (6-3-4, 2-2-4 ACC) at No. 2 Notre Dame (8-0-5, 5-0-3 ACC)

Where: South Bend, Ind.

When: Saturday, 2 p.m.

The Skinny: The No. 23 Virginia men’s soccer team will travel to South Bend, Ind. for its first matchup against Notre Dame as an ACC opponent. It will be the Cavaliers’ final away contest of the year. The team will return to Klöckner Stadium next Tuesday for its final three regular season games.

Virginia will look to extend its unbeaten streak that began with a 3-0 win against George Mason Sept. 17 to 10 games, while No. 2 Notre Dame aims to remain among the nation’s three undefeated teams.

The Cavaliers will test their potent offense against a Fighting Irish squad that boasts the eighth stingiest defense in the country, allowing just .57 goals per game. Virginia, meanwhile, is scoring 2.15 goals per game, good for ninth best in Division I. In the last meeting between the two teams, Virginia knocked Notre Dame from the 2006 NCAA College Cup quarterfinals with a 3-2 win.

Field Hockey

What: No. 5 Virginia (15-3, 3-2 ACC) at. No. 1 Maryland (15-1, 4-0 ACC)

Where: College Park, Md.

When: Friday, 6 p.m.

The Skinny: The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team travels to College Park Friday to wrap up regular season play against No. 1 Maryland. This is the second time Virginia will play a top-ranked team this year after losing to then-No.1 North Carolina Sept. 20.

The Terrapins will be looking to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the season last Sunday against No. 10 Old Dominion, 3-2. Last year, Virginia upset Maryland during the regular season before the Terrapins got even by eliminating the Cavaliers from the ACC Tournament semifinals.

Senior forward Jill Witmer leads the Terrapins with 33 points this season, placing her directly behind Cavalier senior forward Elly Buckley on the NCAA points per game leaderboard. Buckley ranks fifth in Division-I field hockey, averaging 2.56 points per game.

The Cavaliers are coming off a 4-3 win against No. 8 Duke last Friday and will now look to hand the Terrapins their first ACC loss of the season. Buckley earned her second ACC Player of the Week honors of 2013 for her three-goal performance against the Blue Devils on Senior Day. Entering the final regular season contest of her career, Buckley is third on the Cavaliers’ all-time career points list and she leads the ACC this season in both points and goals.

Volleyball

What: Virginia (11-10, 4-5 ACC) vs. Notre Dame (8-11, 2-6 ACC)

Where: Memorial Gymnasium

When: Sunday, 1 p.m.

The Skinny: Fresh off a win against conference rival Virginia Tech, the Virginia volleyball team will face Notre Dame Sunday for the first time as conference opponents.

The Fighting Irish have won just two of their last ten matches. Last weekend, they pulled off a major upset by downing Miami 3-1 before falling 3-0 to No. 18 Florida State. Notre Dame’s inaugural ACC season has not been kind overall as the team ranks in the bottom three in the ACC in every major statistic except blocks.

The Cavaliers, meanwhile, were swept by North Carolina and N.C. State on consecutive nights last weekend. However, the team showed resiliency by bouncing back for a 3-1 win against the Hokies in Blacksburg Wednesday night. Virginia had not beaten its Commonwealth rival since Sept. 18, 2009, a losing streak that had spanned seven matches.

The Cavaliers’ young players have been vital to the team’s success this season, and they were at the top of their game Wednesday. Freshmen Haley Kole and Jasmine Burton led the team with 23 and 20 kills respectively, while sophomore transfer Lauren Fuller recorded 57 assists with eight kills and no attacking errors

After hosting Notre Dame, the Cavaliers hit the road again, visiting Georgia Tech and Clemson the following weekend.
