Last Tuesday, Adventure Club, a Canadian electronic dance music duo, stopped at The National in Richmond on its nationwide Superheroes Anonymous tour.
The adventure began as the crowd — still buzzing with energy after opening acts Hunter Siegel, DallasK and DVBBS left the stage — was thrown into complete darkness. The crowd went wild with anticipation.
Animations of an extraterrestrial world flashed across a diamond-shaped screen, while smoke filled the venue and the sounds of an epic song that could have easily been featured in a superhero movie played in the background. Finally, Christian Srigley and Leighton James of Adventure Club ran onto the stage and began to play songs from their new EP, “Calling All Heroes, Pt. 1.” I knew I was in for a great night, and Adventure Club did not disappoint.
Multiple stage dives later, the audience chanted for an encore as Adventure Club finally left the stage. They came back to give the crowd “Lullabies,” one of my favorite remixes of all time. But even the aptly named track could not dim the crowd’s exuberance, leaving audience members to adventure out into the freezing night with a fortified love for the EDM duo.
