Bodo’s Bagels introduces cakes – or something of the sort

New menu addition lacks substance, balanced taste

It’s no secret that Bodo’s Bagels, a long-time Charlottesville staple, boasts an amazing, affordable menu, including everything from breakfast and lunch bagel sandwiches to omelets to a rotation of daily soups. But there’s always been something missing. Bodo’s has never offered a dessert option — until now. Coming to the Corner and Emmet Street locations in the near future, the Bodo’s located on Preston Avenue has housed the launching of the Bodo’s “cake.”

About the size of a thumb, these cakes are a bite-sized concoction, including three types of chocolate with candied orange peel throughout for only $1.25 a cake.

It should be noted Bodo’s specializes in bagels, and thus has the equipment to match. They use a 500-degree oven that would destroy the average cake, which bakes at around 350 degrees.

The theory behind Bodo’s ability to bake a cake at 500 degrees is impressive, but the reality is less so.

When I took my first bite, I immediately noticed there were different chocolates at work. The cake was moist, yet the consistency wasn’t even throughout. Some bites felt like they contained more granulated sugar that wasn’t properly mixed, while others were moist and chocolaty. Unfortunately, this gritty consistency was found in each of the three cakes I tasted. The candied orange peel tasted sweet and tangy yet played against the consistency of the cake.

For $1.25, I’d prefer something a little more substantial, such as the brownies found at Take It Away or Littlejohn’s. They are admittedly double the price of the Bodo’s offering, but at quadruple the size you get more bang for your buck — both in size and quality.

If you are at Bodo’s Bagels and have an urge for something sweet, the new Bodo’s “cakes” are a great supplement to their already stellar menu. If you are picky about your desserts, though, you might want to try elsewhere.
