No. 12 Virginia wrestling ended its 2013-14 regular season by dismantling George Mason, with the Cavaliers (18-3, 5-1 ACC) winning nine of the afternoon’s 10 matches against the Patriots (6-14, 0-2 EWL) en route to a 34-3 victory.
Sophomore Nick Herrmann, at 125 pounds, got the ball rolling with a 13-4 major decision victory. Redshirt sophomore Joseph Martinez, 133 pounds, earned three more points for Virginia.
George Mason earned its sole win at 141 pounds when sophomore Sahid Kargbo got the best of freshman Emilio Martinez. The Cavaliers quickly responded, however, as No. 13 redshirt junior Gus Sako put the Cavaliers back on the board with a big pin in the first period. Sako is now 16-2 on the season.
No. 14 redshirt sophomore Blaise Butler won 4-2 for the decision victory at 157 pounds. No. 2 redshirt junior Nick Sulzer picked up his 30th win of the season with a technical fall of redshirt sophomore Matt Stull.
Redshirt senior Stephen Doty cruised to the 11-3 victory; Doty is now 25-7 and on a five-match winning streak. In addition, No. 19 redshirt senior Jon Fausey picked up the 8-3 decision in his first match back after an injury sidelined him earlier this season.
The day’s final two matches were nail-biters: at 197 pounds, redshirt sophomore Zach Nye fought out a 4-2 decision and redshirt sophomore Ethan Hayes battled for a 3-2 decision in the heavyweight dual.
The Cavaliers are idle until March 8 when the ACC Championships begin in Blacksburg, Va.
