David Neuman, University architect and chief planning officer, spoke Tuesday evening to Student Council, outlining numerous projects for the near future including renovations of science buildings and the University Hospital System.
“There will be a new addition to the hospital building with a new emergency room,” Neuman said. “That’s a major undertaking; it’s a phase project that will probably take the better part of 5 years.”
In addition, the Office of the Architect plans to address problems with the University Library System in upcoming years. Specifically, Alderman Library will face significant renovations.
“Alderman needs a lot of work; we’re looking at almost entirely redoing the Alderman library,” Neuman said. “We would still keep the historical parts but we are looking at possibly taking out the old stacks and remodeling the new stacks which are from the 1960s. We are going to hold a colloquium in the fall which students who are not graduating will be able to attend and we will be looking for input.”
Neuman said the goal of his office is to improve buildings already on Grounds, not to build many additional buildings.
“We’re going to try and use what we have better,” Neuman said.
Representative Body Chair Michael Promisel, a fourth-year College student, also gave an update about the movement to install printers in the South Lawn. Due to some technological difficulties with installing printers in South Lawn, they will most likely not be able to be put in until next semester.
“At least for the time being, the printers will be put in New Cabell,” Promisel said. “We’re not giving up on printers in South Lawn but it looks like New Cabell is the way forward for this semester.”
