The No. 10 Virginia men’s golf team shattered program records to open the week, shooting a 45-under 819 to win the Jim West Intercollegiate in McKinney, Texas by 29 strokes over second-place Iowa State.
The three-round total was 23 strokes better than the program’s previous best — a 22-under 830 at the East Carolina Emerald Intercollegiate in 1993 — and was the second lowest score against par in ACC history. The Cavaliers’ second-round 21-under 267 was also the lowest scoring mark in team history.
Senior David Pastore shot a pair of 6-under 66 rounds to open and close the tournament, finishing in a tie for first with junior teammate Denny McCarthy by two strokes at 13-under 203. Pastore won the decisive one-hole playoff to take medalist honors for the first time in his career.
McCarthy surpassed his previous 54-hole best of 205 by two strokes en route to notching his fifth top-five finish this season. The junior All-American shot an 8-under 64 during Monday’s second round, improving his career single-round best by one stroke.
Along with Pastore and McCarthy, senior Ben Rusch and freshman Derek Bard also finished in the top-10. After entering the final round in fifth place at 8-under 136, Rusch shot an even-par 72 to finish seventh at 8-under 208.
Bard led the tournament after two rounds at 11-under 133. However, the freshman shot a 5-over 77 Tuesday, quadruple-bogeying his third hole. Bard finished 6-under par for the tournament, good for ninth place and his third top-10 outing in six collegiate appearances.
Freshman Jimmy Stanger rounded out scoring for the Cavaliers, finishing 26th at 1-over 217, while junior Ji Soo Park finished 20th at 1-under 215 while competing as a non-scoring individual.
Virginia will conclude regular season play April 19 and 20 in Raleigh, N.C. at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
