This weekend, the Virginia men’s golf team claimed victory at the 13-team Northern Collegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois in the Cavaliers’ first tournament of the season. No. 13 Virginia shot a collective 15-over 879 at the 54-hole tournament to best Winthrop and Ohio State by three strokes each.
The Cavaliers captured the 15th title of coach Bowen Sargent’s 11-year career at Virginia despite playing a lineup of two freshmen, two sophomores and senior Ji Soo Park, who placed 11th in the individual standings.
Sophomores Jimmy Stanger and Derek Bard paced Virginia by shooting 3-over 219 and 4-over 220 to finish seventh and eighth overall, respectively. Stanger’s top-10 result was the third of his collegiate career.
Virginia started the tournament slowly, shooting 9-over 297 as a team to finish Friday’s opening round in seventh place. The Cavaliers, however, rallied Saturday with an 8-over 296 to enter Sunday third in the field.
Stanger led the Cavaliers on Saturday by shooting 1-over 73. He improved on that performance Sunday, carding a team-best 2-under 70.
Freshmen Austen Truslow and Danny Walker rounded out scoring for Virginia, placing 17th and 30th respectively in their collegiate debuts.
Senior All-American Denny McCarthy missed the tournament readying for the World Amateur Team Championships in Japan, where he will represent his country by playing for Team USA.
