Rowing earns top collegiate crew honors in Championship Eights at Head of the Charles Regatta

The Varsity Eight topped its collegiate competition in Boston for the fourth consecutive year.

The Virginia women’s rowing team once again dominated its collegiate competition at the 50th annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston this weekend, earning the title of top collegiate crew in the Championship Eights for the fourth consecutive year.

The Cavaliers finished third overall in the race, with a time of 16:18.60, coming in behind Cambridge Boat Club (15:44.79) and USRowing (16:04.64), two crews comprised of national team members with Olympic and World Championship experience. Oxford, Michigan, Brown, Yale, Harvard, Wisconsin and Princeton rounded out the top 10.

The lineup for the Cavaliers was sophomore Colette Lucas-Conwell, coxswain; freshman Shawna Sims, stroke; sophomore Georgia Ratcliff, 7; sophomore Hannah Osborne, 6; senior Lizzy Youngling, 5; senior Hemingway Benton, 4; sophomore Erin Briggs, 3; junior Sam Casto, 2; and junior Mackenzi Sherman, bow. Ratcliff and Youngling were in the boat last year, and Benton has been in the boat for the past two years.

In the Women’s Championship Fours, Virginia finished fourth overall with a time of 18:31.52, and second among collegiate boats, coming in less than two seconds behind Syracuse.

The fourth place finish is six places higher than their results from last year's race. The Cavaliers’ lineup was senior Julia Roithmayr, coxswain; freshman Eliza Spilsbury, stroke; junior Hannah Solis-Cohen, 3; junior Tessa Dikkers, 2; and sophomore Jo Gurman, bow. Solis-Cohen and Roithmayr have both competed at the Boston for the Cavaliers in previous years.

The Head of the Charles featured 776 rowing clubs of all ages with 2,252 entries.

The Cavaliers will travel to Princeton, New Jersey for the Princeton Chase this weekend.
