Coffee didn’t leave a good first impression on me. When I was first introduced to it as a child, it left a bitter taste in my mouth. But once I grew up a bit, I realized coffee wasn’t all that bad.

We decided to take things slow. I began with coffee ice cream, transitioned into mocha frappuccinos, made my way to caramel macchiatos and finally settled down with a real cup of coffee.

Our relationship really took off once I entered college and I realized just how many ways coffee makes my life better. The drink gets me through the day every day — and is often the first thing that touches my lips in the morning. When I am bored, stressed, tired or lonely, coffee comes to the rescue.

When I wake up in the morning after not getting enough sleep, it is waiting for me in the kitchen to help me form coherent sentences. Some days, coffee will meet me at the Corner and accompany me to class. After we spend any significant amount of time together, I find myself jittery and excited, ready to take on anything which comes my way.

When I find myself stuck in the library for hours, finishing hundreds of pages of reading, coffee sits with me patiently, waiting until I need its assistance to internalize monotonous readings. As I bring coffee to my lips, I find the strength to go on.

Coffee has a knack for bringing people together. If I ever need to reconnect with a friend, coffee paves the way for us to start our conversation — never offering unwarranted advice or cutting us off as we tell each other stories.

Coffee also doesn’t kiss and tell — it is perfectly fine keeping everything private. While it was probably a bit obvious when we were on our first, second or third dates — inside of ice cream cartons and transparent Frappuccino cups — once things got serious, the state of our relationship remained completely under wraps.

Coffee and I balance each other out — on days when I am hot, it comes to me with ice to cool me down, but on days when I am cold, coffee is able to warm me up. It understands that on different days I need different things, and goes out of its way to accommodate my needs.

On days when I don’t meet up with coffee, I just don’t feel the same. It is like something inside of me is missing — like I have a chemical imbalance that causes my head to hurt. I can be temporarily consoled by tea or soda, but nothing can take coffee’s place in my heart.

While we might spend some time apart here and there — like this summer, when I went to Ireland and had to spend most of the time with tea — I have a feeling that coffee is going to be there for me for the rest of my life. It is a good thing my parents love coffee too.
